News: ECOFLOW Project Returns to IBC Accelerator
IBC, Amsterdam, 30th July 2025 - Global provider of video streaming software and services, Accedo and Humans Not Robots (HNR), a market-leading software provider specializing in reducing carbon emissions and costs from businesses' technology footprints, are once again supporting the ECOFLOW (Energy-Conserving Optimization for Future-ready, Low-impact Online Workflows) project as part of this year’s IBC Accelerator Program. Following on from the success of last year, the second phase aims to establish standardized methods and models for measuring streaming's energy consumption and identify energy-saving opportunities throughout the technology supply chain.
The initial ECOFLOW project, which was led by Accedo and HNR, demonstrated proof-of-concept optimizations and highlighted the industry's state of play. Phase 2, championed by ITV, Channel 4, EBU, the IET and BT Media & Broadcast, aims to create actionable business cases and strategic alignment to make sustainability a core objective across the industry. Accedo and HNR have returned as leading participants, and are joined by Bouygues Telecom, Quanteec, Greening of Streaming and Bitmovin.
This year’s project aims to develop a digital twin to simulate and optimize streaming pipelines, enabling data-driven insights even in the absence of complete real-world data. It will also seek to engage with platform product teams to understand barriers and motivations for adopting energy-saving objectives.
François Polarczyk, Sustainability Director, Accedo, commented: “When we started the ECOFLOW project last year, we had ambitions to not only help the industry understand the impact of video streaming on the environment, but also helping reduce its carbon footprint. Despite our groundbreaking findings on end-user devices, last year was very much a proof-of-concept - particularly on the distribution side - whereas this year we are seeing some tangible momentum which will help get us a step closer to that goal.”
"Building on the foundation we established with last year’s ECOFLOW project, we’re committed to continuing this vital work alongside Accedo and our joint industry partners," said Kristan Bullett, CEO and Co-Founder of HNR. "Our mission has always been to help businesses adopt practices that are not only more sustainable, but also cost-effective. This next phase is about turning our previous progress into actionable solutions that benefit both businesses and the planet."
